The Answer

I believe there are five steps a teacher can take to integrate technology effectively into a classroom in order to prepare his or her students for global learning and understanding:

1. It is necessary to determine the content that needs to be taught:

  • What standard from the Common Core or Essential Standards does this content address?

  • Do you know this content?  If not, how will you learn it?

2. Determine what technology you want to use to help teach your topic:

  • What technology do you have available at your school?

  • What will you use the technology for?

  • How will the experience be meaningful for your students?

3. Design an activity that brings together your content and your technology:

  • What additional materials do you need to gather to ensure that your students meet the standards?

  • How will your technology engage your students in global awareness while still learning the required content?

4. Question what outcome you want your students to have:

  • How does this activity encourage your students to be aware of what is going on in the world?

  • What will your students do to show they have accomplished their learning goal?

5. Reflect and refract:

  • What did your students learn?  What did they not learn?

  • Did the technology give your students an opportunity to develop an understanding of global content and awareness?

  • What is the evidence that proves you and your students were successful?

  • What are the next steps?
